This study explores the joint impact of environmental performance and corporate governance on two distinct aspects of firm outcomes, namely efficiency and profitability, within the context of China’s heavily polluting industries. Grounded in resource-based theory and agency theory, the analysis utilizes a panel dataset comprising 742 listed firms across 16 heavily polluting industries from 2017 to 2021. Efficiency is measured using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), while profitability is assessed through Return on Assets (ROA). To address potential endogeneity issues and ensure the robustness of the results, the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation is employed.
